Cheap & Simple Websites - Home
So, you want a cheap and simple website but don’t know where to start? You are in the right place!
You can go to Google and type in “web design” and get literally millions of results. Where do you start?
Any business - even the smallest one man band - needs a web presence nowadays. The internet is here to stay. Contrary to popular belief, you probably do not need a big flash website with lots of moving graphics. Think of a simple web site like an electronic business card. If people can find it, read something about you and then pick up the telephone and call you, the site has done its job.
Many people get put off because they find themselves baffled by all the jargon when considering a web site. Do you know exactly what a “domain name” is and where to get one? what is a “server” and do you need one? What type of site do you want? Do you want “flash” pages? What is “optimisation” and do you need it? If the answer to any of these questions is, “I am not sure” or “I don’t know” then you are the person this site is aimed at.
A while ago, a friend of mine told me he wanted a small web site and asked me if I could help. I asked him the questions above, and his reply was:
“What is a domain name? Is that like Google? I don’t know! I just want a cheap and simple web site without needing to learn all about that stuff. I want to give you a bit of money and some text, and have my site appear on the internet. Oh, and make it so people can find it on Google.”
I built him his cheap, simple one page website. I handled the details for him and got it on page one of Google for his niche and he was happy. He told his friend - a plumber - and I made him one. Cheap Simple Websites was born.
Perhaps you are half way there already?
Maybe you are one of the many people who bought a domain name (your internet address) already? Many people have bought a name and have done nothing with it because they was not sure where to go from there. Maybe you approached a web design company and they offered to make you something “simple” for a mere £600 or so? You maybe went away saying you would “think about it” like I would have done.
Why “simple” websites?
I prefer fairly simple websites; let me tell you why. Websites full of fancy moving graphics, movies, soundtracks and other unnecessary things all detract from the main purpose: to get people to read about your business and get in touch with you. How many times have you gone to a website, waited a few moments while logos and fancy graphics wafted across your screen and then clicked “skip intro” to get to what you actually want to know? I do that often. If I want to look at moving graphics, I will watch TV. If I want to get information about something on the internet, I want to read about it. Pretty pictures do not help me to read.
There is another reason. Search engines (like Google) use automated text reading robots to read websites. Google cannot look at pretty pictures. Give Google text and it will understand your site. If Google understands your site, more people will find it - simple as that!
Is a cheap simple website for you?
If you are a fashion designer or in some other kind of business where artistic flare and the visual aspect will be appreciated or expected, you perhaps need a fancy website and this site is not for you.
If you are in a business where artistic imagery is not an integral part, a fancy website may work against you. If I want to get my fridge repaired, I want to see a simple website that says: “Here is Joe Cool - fridge repairs” and some information about Joe and his number. If Joe had a website that was too fancy, I might think Joe had too much money and would overcharge me as a result. After all, Joe’s customers paid for that website didn’t they? People think about stuff like that in a recession.
